How to Make a Paper Roll Holder
Ever found yourself struggling with a messy desk or workspace due to unruly paper rolls? A DIY paper roll holder can help you keep your space organized and tidy. Here's a simple, step-by-step guide on how to make one using everyday materials. Let's dive right in!
Before we start, gather your materials: a cardboard box, scissors or a craft knife, a ruler, a pencil, and some decorative materials like paint or washi tape (optional). You'll also need some paper rolls, of course!
Designing Your Paper Roll Holder
First, decide on the size and shape of your holder. For a standard paper roll, a 12" x 12" square box will work perfectly. If you're using larger rolls, you might need a bigger box.
Using a pencil and ruler, mark out the dimensions on your cardboard box. For a square holder, you'll need to cut out four equal sides. For a rectangular holder, you'll need to cut out two longer sides and two shorter sides.
Cutting the Box
Carefully cut along the lines you've drawn using scissors or a craft knife. Be sure to cut through all layers of the cardboard to create an open box shape.
If you're using a craft knife, place your cardboard on a self-healing cutting mat to protect your work surface. Also, always cut away from yourself to ensure safety.
Creating the Slots
Next, you'll need to create slots for your paper rolls to sit in. Measure and mark out the center of each side of your box. Then, measure and mark out the width of your paper roll (usually around 3-4 inches) on either side of the center mark.
Cut along these lines to create a slot for each paper roll. Make sure your slots are wide enough for the rolls to fit snugly but not so wide that they wobble around.
Decorating Your Paper Roll Holder
Now that your holder is functional, it's time to make it look great! You can paint your holder, wrap it in decorative paper, or use washi tape to create patterns and designs.
If you're painting, apply a few coats of acrylic paint, allowing each coat to dry completely before adding the next. You can also distress the edges with sandpaper for a shabby-chic look.
Painting Techniques
For a simple yet elegant look, you can paint your holder a solid color. Or, try a two-tone effect by painting the inside of the holder a different color from the outside.
If you're feeling creative, you could even try a chevron pattern or stripes. Just remember to seal your paint with a clear coat to protect it from wear and tear.
Using Decorative Paper or Washi Tape
For a quick and easy decorating option, wrap your holder in decorative paper or use washi tape to create patterns. You can find a wide variety of designs at craft stores or online.
To wrap your holder in paper, measure and cut the paper to fit each side. Apply glue or double-sided tape to the back of the paper and attach it to the holder, smoothing out any wrinkles as you go.
Finally, place your paper rolls into the slots, and you're done! Your new paper roll holder will not only keep your workspace tidy but also add a touch of personality. Happy crafting!
