Before we dive into where to buy, let's briefly discuss what makes purple coleus so special. Native to Southeast Asia, these plants are part of the mint family and are beloved for their striking, often iridescent, purple leaves. They thrive in partial shade and can grow up to 3 feet tall, making them an excellent choice for borders, containers, or even hanging baskets. Now, let's get to the heart of the matter: where to purchase these gorgeous plants.

Local Nurseries and Garden Centers

Your local nursery or garden center is often the best place to start your search for purple coleus. These establishments typically carry a variety of coleus varieties, including purple shades like 'Kong Jr. Purple', 'Main Street Purple', and 'Purple Palace'.

Benefits of shopping locally include:

• Expert advice from staff on plant care and growing conditions.
• Ability to inspect the plant's health and size before purchasing.
• Supporting local businesses and your community.

Call Ahead or Check Online Inventory

Before visiting, call or check the garden center's website to confirm they have purple coleus in stock. Some nurseries may only carry certain varieties or have limited stock, so it's best to ensure they have what you're looking for.

Additionally, ask about their growing conditions and care instructions to ensure the plant's health and your success in growing it.

Join Local Plant Swaps or Groups

Joining local gardening groups or attending plant swaps can be a fun and eco-friendly way to acquire purple coleus. These events allow you to connect with fellow plant enthusiasts and potentially find rare or unique varieties.

To find local groups, search online for gardening clubs, Facebook groups, or Meetup.com events in your area. You can also ask around at local nurseries or garden centers for recommendations.
