Look im not totally opposed to warmer tones on timber but personally I draw the line at artificial... | By Flip2Thrive | Of all the timber tones out there red mahogany would have to be my least favourite. I loved this set. I loved the shape. It had great bones. It was solid timber but man did that red stain have to go. As for the condition there was some deep scratches, some dense and the finish was failing on both of the bedsides. However this is all aesthetic and it can be remedied quite easily. So stick around if you want to see exactly how to take red stained mahogany furniture like this and turn it into something that is neutral, raw and a little bit more modern. My first step was to remove these ring pulls person I don't like them. You may love them. Come for me in the comments if you're a fan of the ring pull. But I needed to get them off so that I could give the piece a thorough clean down. To give the piece a clean I use crud cutter. It's a degreaser. It's fantastic for cutting through dirt grease and grime. You want to make sure that you're getting inside the drawers, underneath the drawers, give the piece a vacuum, get everything off. This is one of those steps in my opinion that you cannot skip when you are flipping furniture especially if you're doing raw tim finishes like this and that's because when you sand you're creating friction friction creates heat and heat will disperse any oil that is sitting on the surface further into the timber piece that you are working on. Because this set had those scratches I went straight in with 80 grit sandpaper so that I could remove those. The only drawback with this is that you actually create micro texture or pigtail swirls in your work when you're sanding with lower grades of sandpaper and that just means that you're going to have to spend a little bit more time coming up the grades of sandpaper to smooth out that microtex If you jump up the grades too fast you actually close the little micro peatail swirls over you don't actually sand them out. So when you go to stain or you go to paintwash you will actually see the stain sit in that little peatail swirl even though the timber feels smooth on top. Now I'm not going to lie I was sanding for a while on this set it did have a penetrative stain which means that the stain is designed to seep down into the timber. So the only way to remove the is to physically sand through it. A carbide scraper is pretty useless here as is a chemical based stripper. A chemical based stripper will remove the top gloss layer but it won't remove anything that's soaked down into the timber. So you've just gotta sand it off. To get around the little legs I used my Emery tape if you guys have been following me for a while you would know that my dad just recently introduced me to this tape and it is a game changer when you have little details like this. Now even after removing all of the finish from this set I felt like the timber had a bit of a pinky tinge so I applied a paint wash. Now paint washing is essentially a technique where you are taking a watered down mix of paint applying it to the surface to achieve different results. And in this case I wanted to neutralise the red so I actually applied a green based paint wash. By doing this I've created a cleaner canvas for a cool brown tone. I know now that when I put my tinted hard wax over the top which still has a little bit of warmth in it I won't be getting too warmer result. I'm not going to be seeing that red come through because we've been able to neutralise it with the green. Now if this is all sounding like to you and you want a little bit more information about paintwashing colour theory. How to apply a paintwash. What do I put in my paintwashes to achieve different results then I've created some guides through the link in my bio which are really easily digested beginner friendly which will break down all of the information that you need to know. This is where it was at after two applications of that paintwash. It's light, bright, nice, clean canvas, ready for that mid brown tone to go over the top which I created using two tinted hardwax oils by Fitties. This is their oak lightening and rustic oak and I mixed up what almost looked like an espresso tone to me and I knew it wouldn't be that dark going onto the piece but I applied with a roller and then I buffed it in with an old T-shirt. I found that one application of this mix was enough to give me the depth of colour that I was looking for for this piece. However you can do a second coat if you're wanting that little bit more saturation of colour. Here they are side by side. The tinted hardwax obviously is up the top and the paintwashed roar is down the bottom and I just think it's such a beautiful true latte tone. Not overly warm not overly cool. I followed the same application technique on the bedsides applying with the roller rubbing the excess off with the old T-shirt and then I moved on to installing some new hardware. You could really put any tone of hardware onto this piece and it would look amazing because it's so neutral. But I something that was classic that was going to be understated to really allow that timber grain to shine. So I just went with a classic matte black pull. So guys this is a reminder of where we were. Dark dated red and this is where we are now. Neutral could go into anyone's home. You still see that beautiful timber grain. I love that latte tone. I'm slightly obsessed and I think the black handles look amazing with it as well. Just classic understated. As always I'd love to know what you guys think at home though so jump in the comments and let me know. Is it a nail or a fail?Identify Redwood in Furniture: Easy Grain & Colour Clues

Additionally, redwood is naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insects, which is why many outdoor furniture pieces are made from this wood. This resistance gives redwood furniture a longer lifespan, even when exposed to the elements.
Weight and Density
Redwood is denser than many other wood species, which gives redwood furniture a solid, robust feel. Despite its density, redwood is lighter than many other hardwoods, making it easier to work with and move around. This combination of weight and density contributes to the sturdiness and longevity of redwood furniture.
