Simple DIY Garden Bench Plans
Transform your outdoor space into a cozy sanctuary with a DIY garden bench. Not only does it provide a perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature, but it also adds a personal touch to your garden. With simple, step-by-step plans, you can create a beautiful bench that complements your garden's aesthetic. Let's dive into the world of woodworking and create a garden bench that's both functional and stylish.
Before you start, gather your materials and tools. You'll need pressure-treated lumber, screws, a saw, drill, screwdriver, and safety gear. We'll be using cedar for this project, as it's durable and resistant to rot. Once you have everything ready, let's begin.
Designing Your Bench
First, decide on the design. For a simple yet elegant look, consider a classic slat-back bench. It's easy to build and complements various garden styles. Our plan will focus on this design, with dimensions that seat two comfortably.
Sketch your design or use online tools to create a blueprint. Ensure the bench is proportionate to your garden and fits the space allocated. For this project, we'll create a bench that's 60 inches long, 18 inches deep, and 18 inches tall.
Cutting the Lumber
Using your design, cut the lumber pieces. You'll need two 2x6x60-inch boards for the seat, two 2x4x18-inch boards for the legs, two 2x4x18-inch boards for the supports, and ten 1x4x18-inch boards for the back slats.
For the seat, cut four 2x6x18-inch boards to create the frame. These will support the seat boards. Cut two 2x6x16-inch boards for the seat itself. Ensure all cuts are straight and smooth for a professional finish.
Assembling the Seat
Start by attaching the seat frame to the seat boards. Lay the 2x6x18-inch boards parallel, 16 inches apart, and secure them to the seat frame using 2-inch screws. Ensure the frame is square by measuring the diagonals and adjusting as needed.
Next, attach the seat boards to the frame. Place the 2x6x16-inch boards across the frame, leaving a 1-inch gap between them. Secure them with 2-inch screws. Your bench seat is now complete.
Building the Bench Structure
Now that the seat is done, it's time to build the bench's structure. This will provide support and stability for the seat and back.
Cut two 2x4x16-inch boards for the back supports. Attach these to the inside of the seat frame, 1 inch from the top. These will support the back slats. Ensure they're level and square.
Attaching the Legs
Cut two 2x4x18-inch boards for the front legs. Attach these to the front of the seat frame, 1 inch from the bottom. Ensure they're plumb (vertical) and square. Repeat this process for the back legs, using two 2x4x15-inch boards.
To reinforce the legs, cut two 2x4x15-inch boards for the stretchers. Attach these between the front and back legs, 8 inches from the ground. Your bench structure is now complete.
Adding the Back Slats
Finally, attach the back slats. Space the 1x4x18-inch boards evenly across the back supports. Leave a 1/2-inch gap between each slat for drainage and airflow. Secure them with 1-inch screws.
Stain or paint your bench to protect it from the elements and match your garden's aesthetic. Allow it to dry completely before placing it in your garden.
There you have it - a simple, DIY garden bench that's perfect for relaxing and enjoying your outdoor space. With a bit of effort and these straightforward plans, you've created a beautiful addition to your garden. Happy woodworking!
