Nature and wildlife are perennial favorites among jigsaw lino print artists. The tactile quality of the medium lends itself beautifully to capturing the textures of leaves, feathers, and fur. Consider creating a series of prints featuring different types of birds, each with its unique plumage and posture. Alternatively, you could focus on a single subject, such as a majestic tree, and create a series of prints that capture its changing appearance throughout the seasons.

Nature-Inspired Designs

Nature-inspired designs can range from realistic depictions to stylized, abstract interpretations. For a more naturalistic approach, consider using photographs or direct observation as a starting point for your designs. On the other hand, if you prefer a more abstract style, allow your imagination to run wild, creating fantastical creatures and landscapes that defy reality.

Geometric patterns are another popular theme in jigsaw lino print. The clean lines and bold shapes of geometric designs lend themselves well to the medium, resulting in striking, eye-catching artworks. Consider creating a series of prints that explore different geometric shapes, such as circles, triangles, and squares. You could also experiment with different color combinations to create a sense of harmony or contrast.

Geometric Patterns

Geometric patterns can be used to create a sense of order and balance in your artworks. Alternatively, you could use them to create a sense of chaos and disorientation, challenging the viewer's perceptions. Consider using repetition and variation to create a sense of movement and energy in your prints.

Selecting the right linoleum is essential for a successful jigsaw lino print. Traditional linoleum is made from a mixture of linseed oil, pine resin, and wood flour, pressed onto a canvas backing. This material is soft and easy to carve, making it ideal for beginners. However, it can be prone to warping and cracking, so it's important to store it properly. Synthetic linoleum, on the other hand, is more durable and resistant to warping, but it can be more difficult to carve.

Choosing the Right Materials

In addition to linoleum, you'll need a variety of carving tools, ink, and paper. Carving tools come in a range of shapes and sizes, from small, fine-tipped tools for detailed work to large, heavy-duty tools for removing large areas of linoleum. Ink is available in a wide range of colors and types, from water-based inks to oil-based inks. Paper is also an important consideration, with different types of paper yielding different results. Heavyweight, acid-free paper is generally the best choice for jigsaw lino print.

Once you've selected your materials, it's time to start carving. The key to successful carving is to work slowly and carefully, using steady, controlled movements. Remember that you can always carve away more material, but you can't add it back. Start by drawing your design onto the linoleum using a pencil or carbon paper. Then, use your carving tools to remove the areas that you don't want to print.

I finally had time to make a few test prints for this one today. I am still experimenting with paper and will probably need to order a different one… What’s funny is that it took me about 10 minutes to correctly assemble the jigsaw after cutting it. Too many little pieces. Seems that I have outsmarted myself this time. I’ll probably also share the carving and cutting process soon if anyone is interested and if I find the energy to edit the recorded clips. Honestly, making “content” is quit... The Printing Process

The printing process involves inking the linoleum block and then transferring the ink onto paper using a printing press or a baren. First, roll ink onto the linoleum block using a brayer, ensuring that the entire surface is evenly coated. Then, place a piece of paper onto the block and use a printing press or baren to transfer the ink onto the paper. Finally, carefully peel the paper off the block to reveal your print.
