How to Transform a Mini Skirt into a Top
Ever found yourself with a mini skirt that you no longer wear, but can't bear to part with? Instead of letting it gather dust in your closet, why not repurpose it into a stylish top? This DIY project is not only eco-friendly but also a great way to express your creativity. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to turn a mini skirt into a top.
Before you start, ensure you have the necessary tools and materials. You'll need scissors, a sewing machine, pins, a measuring tape, and some fabric for the straps and waistband. Also, choose a skirt with an elastic waistband for an easier transformation.
Preparation
First, try on the skirt to determine where you want the top to end. Mark this point with a safety pin. Remember, the top should be slightly longer than a crop top but shorter than a regular top.
Next, lay the skirt flat on a table. Use the safety pin as a guide to cut along the waistband, creating two pieces - the part that will become the top and the remaining fabric that can be used for straps or waistband.
Creating the Top
Turn the skirt piece inside out. Fold over the raw edge of the waistband, creating a new hem. Pin this in place and sew it, creating a neat, finished edge for your top.
Now, try on the top again to ensure the length is right. If it's too long, you can always cut it shorter. Once you're satisfied with the length, turn the top right side out.
Adding Straps
Using the remaining fabric from the skirt, cut two strips to create the straps. The width of the straps is up to you, but they should be long enough to go over your shoulders and tie at the back.
Fold each strap in half lengthwise, with the right sides facing in. Sew along the long edge, leaving the short edges open. Turn the straps right side out and press them flat. Then, sew the raw edges of the short ends closed.
Finishing Touches
Try on the top again with the straps. Mark where you want the straps to attach to the top. Remove the top and pin the straps in place. Sew them securely to the top.
Finally, try on your new top one last time. Make any adjustments if necessary, and then you're ready to show off your stylish, unique creation!
Wearing your repurposed top is not only a great way to express your style but also a fantastic conversation starter. You'll be surprised at how many people will ask where you got such a unique piece. So, go ahead, get creative, and enjoy your new top!
