How to Sew an Ottoman Cover
Transforming a plain ottoman into a stylish and functional piece of furniture is a rewarding DIY project that anyone can achieve with a little patience and the right sewing skills. Sewing an ottoman cover not only adds a personal touch to your space but also protects your ottoman from wear and tear. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create a beautiful ottoman cover that you'll love.
Before you start, gather your materials and tools. You'll need fabric, scissors, a sewing machine, pins, a measuring tape, and a pencil. For this guide, we'll assume you have a simple, rectangular ottoman with no curves or unusual shapes.
Measuring and Cutting Your Fabric
Accurate measurements are crucial for a perfect fit. Measure the length, width, and height of your ottoman, then add 2 inches to each dimension to account for seam allowances. Cut your fabric according to these measurements.
For the sides, cut four pieces of fabric that are the height of your ottoman plus 2 inches (for the seam allowance and the bottom hem) by the width of your ottoman plus 2 inches. For the top and bottom, cut two pieces that are the length and width of your ottoman plus 2 inches on each side.
Sewing the Sides
Start by sewing the side panels together. Take two of the side pieces and place them right sides together. Sew along the height of the ottoman, leaving the top and bottom open. Repeat with the other two side pieces.
Next, sew the bottom hem on each side panel. Fold the bottom of each panel up 1 inch, then fold it again another inch to create a double-fold hem. Sew along the bottom edge to secure the hem.
Attaching the Top and Bottom Panels
Now it's time to attach the top and bottom panels. Place the top panel right side down on a flat surface. Place one of the side panels on top of it, right sides together, aligning the edges. Sew along the top edge, leaving the sides open.
Repeat this process with the other three sides and the bottom panel. Once all four sides are attached to the top and bottom panels, you should have a large, rectangular envelope with an opening on one side.
Finishing the Ottoman Cover
Turn your ottoman cover right side out through the opening. Press the seams with an iron to ensure sharp creases. Fold the raw edges of the opening under 1 inch, then fold it again another inch to create a double-fold hem. Sew along the edge to close the opening.
Your ottoman cover is now complete! Place it over your ottoman and enjoy your newly upholstered furniture.
Remember, sewing an ottoman cover is a great way to update your space without breaking the bank. With a little creativity and the right fabric, you can create a piece that reflects your personal style. Happy sewing!
