How to Make an Ottoman Cover with Piping
Transforming a plain ottoman into a stylish and inviting seating option is easier than you think with a custom-made cover featuring elegant piping. This DIY project not only adds a touch of sophistication but also protects your ottoman from everyday wear and tear. Let's dive into the step-by-step process of creating an ottoman cover with piping that will elevate your space.
Before you start, gather your materials: fabric of your choice, piping cord, piping foot for your sewing machine, scissors, measuring tape, fabric marker, straight pins, and a sewing machine. Ensure your fabric is wide enough to wrap around your ottoman with some overlap for seam allowance.
Measuring and Cutting Your Fabric
Accurate measurements are key to a perfect fit. Measure the width, depth, and height of your ottoman, then add 2 inches to each dimension for seam allowance. Cut your fabric according to these measurements.
For the piping, you'll need to calculate the perimeter of your ottoman (width + depth x 2) and add 1 inch for seam allowance. Cut your piping cord to this length, plus an extra 2 inches for overlap.
Creating the Piping
Sew the piping cord to the piping fabric, right sides facing in. Use your piping foot to ensure a consistent width. Leave a 2-inch opening to insert the cord.
Once sewn, turn the piping right side out and press. Insert the piping cord through the opening, using a safety pin or chopstick to help guide it through. Once the cord is fully inserted, sew the opening closed.
Attaching the Piping to the Ottoman Cover
Lay your ottoman cover flat and place the piping along the edges, leaving a 1-inch gap at the corners. Pin the piping in place, ensuring it's centered and the cord is facing outwards.
Using your sewing machine, sew along the pinned edge, following the piping cord. Remove the pins as you go. Once all four sides are sewn, you'll have a beautiful piped edge around your ottoman cover.
Assembling the Ottoman Cover
With the piped edge complete, it's time to assemble the cover. Fold the fabric in half, right sides facing in, and sew along the bottom edge, leaving the top open.
Turn the cover right side out and press. Insert your ottoman into the cover, ensuring it's centered. Fold the excess fabric at the top over to create a clean edge, then tuck it inside the cover. Use straight pins to secure it in place.
Finishing the Ottoman Cover
Sew around the top edge of the cover, removing the pins as you go. Ensure you're sewing through all layers, including the tucked-in fabric. Once sewn, turn the cover right side out and press.
Your ottoman is now protected and stylish with its new piped cover. Place it back in your space, and enjoy the transformation!
