How to Make a Simple Handbag
Creating a simple yet stylish handbag can be a rewarding DIY project. With the right materials and a little patience, you can craft a unique accessory that reflects your personal style. Let's dive into the step-by-step process of making a simple handbag.
Before you start, gather your materials. You'll need fabric, lining fabric, webbing or ribbon for the handles, scissors, a sewing machine, pins, and a measuring tape. For this guide, we'll focus on a simple envelope-style handbag.
Design and Pattern Making
Start by deciding on the size and shape of your handbag. For an envelope-style bag, you'll need two main pieces of fabric, each measuring twice the desired width of your bag plus seam allowance, and twice the desired height plus seam allowance. Don't forget to add extra for the handles.
Once you have your pattern pieces, cut them out from your chosen fabric and lining material. Remember to account for seam allowances, typically around 1/2 inch or 1.27 cm.
Sewing the Outer Bag
Begin by sewing the side seams of your outer bag. Place the right sides of the fabric together and sew along the height, leaving the top open. Repeat this for both sides.
Next, press the seams open and then topstitch along the same lines to create a neat finish. This will also help to reinforce the seams.
Sewing the Lining
Follow the same steps to sew the side seams of your lining fabric. However, you don't need to topstitch the lining as it will be hidden inside the bag.
Now, press the top edge of both the outer bag and the lining. This will create a clean edge for your handles to sit on.
Adding the Handles
Measure and cut your webbing or ribbon to the desired length for your handles. You'll need two pieces, each long enough to go from the top of one side of the bag, across the bottom, and up to the other side.
Place the handles on the right side of the outer bag, positioning them along the pressed edge. Pin in place, then sew along the edge, securing the handles to the bag. Make sure to leave the ends of the handles free for now.
Attaching the Lining
With the right sides facing, place the outer bag and lining together at the top. Sew around the top edge, leaving an opening on one side for turning. This will be your bag's opening.
Clip the corners, then turn the bag right side out through the opening. Press the top edge, ensuring the handles are neat and flat.
Finishing Touches
Topstitch along the top edge of the bag, closing the opening and securing the lining in place. Make sure to catch the ends of the handles as you sew.
Finally, tuck the raw edges of the opening inside the bag and press. This will create a neat, finished edge for your handbag.
Congratulations, you've just made a simple yet stylish handbag! Now that you've mastered the basics, why not experiment with different fabrics, shapes, or even add a zipper for extra security? Happy sewing!
