How to Make a Denim Bag from Jeans
Ever wondered how to transform your old, worn-out jeans into a stylish and functional denim bag? Upcycling is not only eco-friendly but also a fantastic way to express your creativity. In this step-by-step guide, we'll show you how to make a denim bag from jeans, perfect for carrying your essentials in a unique, personalized way.
Before you start, gather your materials: an old pair of jeans, scissors, a sewing machine with a denim needle, matching thread, a ruler, chalk or a fabric marker, and a safety pin. Let's dive into the process, ensuring you'll have a stunning denim bag ready to use in no time.
Planning and Preparing Your Jeans
First, decide on the size and style of your bag. For this guide, we'll create a medium-sized tote bag. Lay your jeans flat and use them as a template to plan your bag's dimensions. Mark the following points with chalk or a fabric marker:
- Top of the bag (waistline of the jeans)
- Bottom of the bag (hem of the jeans)
- Side seams (outer edges of the jeans legs)
- Handles (mark two points on the waistband, about 3 inches apart)
Cutting the Main Bag Pieces
Using sharp scissors, carefully cut along your marked lines. You'll need two main pieces for the bag: the front and the back. If your jeans are not wide enough, you can use both legs to create a wider bag, joining them at the seams.
Once cut, you'll have two large rectangles of denim. If you used both legs, make sure the grain of the fabric runs vertically for a stronger bag.
Creating the Handles
From the waistband of your jeans, cut two strips, each about 3 inches wide and long enough to fit over your shoulder comfortably. For a 12-inch drop, you'll need strips around 24 inches long. Fold each strip in half lengthwise, with the right sides facing in, and sew along the open edge using a ยฝ-inch seam allowance.
Turn the handles right side out and press. To reinforce the handles, topstitch along the outer edges. Set the handles aside for now.
Sewing the Bag
With the right sides facing together, sew the front and back pieces of your bag along the side seams and the bottom edge, using a ยฝ-inch seam allowance. Leave the top edge open.
Press the seams open to prevent bulk. Now, turn the bag right side out and press the top edge.
Adding the Bottom Reinforcement
To strengthen the bottom of your bag, cut a rectangle of denim, about 3 inches wide and the same length as the bottom edge of your bag. Fold this rectangle in half lengthwise, with the right sides facing in, and sew along the open edge using a ยฝ-inch seam allowance.
Turn the strip right side out and press. Place it along the bottom edge of your bag, with the right sides facing together, and sew in place. This will create a boxed bottom for your bag, making it stand upright.
Attaching the Handles
Mark the center point of the top edge of your bag. Measure in 1 inch from this point on both sides and mark these points as well. These will be the attachment points for your handles.
Place the handles across the top of the bag, with the raw edges aligned with the marked points. Sew the handles in place, using a safety pin to help guide them through the bag. Make sure the handles are facing the right direction โ you want the folded edge to be on the inside of the bag.
Finishing Touches
Turn the bag right side out and press the top edge. To create a clean, finished look, fold the top edge over to the wrong side by about ยฝ inch and press. Then, fold it over again by about 1 inch and press. Topstitch along the folded edge to secure it in place.
Your denim bag is now complete and ready to use! Show off your upcycled creation and enjoy the satisfaction of having made something unique and functional from an old pair of jeans.
Don't stop at just one bag โ experiment with different sizes, styles, and embellishments to create a whole collection of denim bags. Happy sewing, and happy upcycling!
