DIY Bag Organizer Insert: Step-by-Step Guide
Are you tired of rummaging through your bag to find your essentials? A bag organizer insert can be your game-changer, keeping your belongings neat and easily accessible. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make one that suits your needs.
Before you start, gather your materials. You'll need fabric for the main body and pockets, webbing for the straps, a zipper, scissors, sewing machine, pins, and a measuring tape. Let's dive into the process.
Design and Measure
First, decide on the size and shape of your bag organizer. Measure the interior dimensions of your bag to ensure a snug fit. Sketch your design, including pocket sizes and placements.
Once you're satisfied with your design, measure and mark the fabric accordingly. For a custom fit, consider adding adjustable straps to accommodate different bag sizes.
Create the Main Body
Cut the Fabric
Using your measurements, cut out the main body of the organizer and the pockets. For the main body, you'll need two pieces of fabric. For the pockets, you'll need multiple pieces, depending on your design.
Don't forget to add seam allowances to your measurements. A standard allowance is about 1/2 inch, but you can adjust this based on your sewing machine's settings and your personal preference.
Sew the Main Body
With right sides together, sew around the edges of the main body pieces, leaving the top open. Remember to backstitch at the beginning and end to reinforce the seam.
Press the seam allowance open using an iron. This will help your organizer maintain its shape and make it easier to sew the pockets onto the main body.
Add the Pockets
Sew the Pockets
Sew the pockets together, leaving the top open. If your pockets have specific functions, like a phone pocket or a pen pocket, make sure they're the right size for their intended use.
Press the seam allowance open. Then, place the pockets on the main body where you want them to be positioned. Pin them in place.
Sew the Pockets to the Main Body
Sew around the edges of the pockets, attaching them to the main body. Make sure to leave the top of the pockets open for easy access.
Press the seam allowance towards the pockets. This will help hide the raw edges and give your organizer a polished look.
Add the Zipper
Install the Zipper
Measure and cut your zipper to the width of the organizer's opening. Sew the zipper tape to the top of the organizer, sandwiching the raw edge of the fabric between the zipper tape and the zipper itself.
Sew the zipper in place, making sure to backstitch at the beginning and end. Test the zipper to ensure it works smoothly.
Add the Straps
Sew the Straps
Cut your webbing into straps of the desired length. Fold each strap in half, right sides together, and sew along the long edge. Turn the strap right side out and press.
Attach the straps to the organizer using D-rings or by sewing them directly onto the fabric. Make sure they're positioned so they can secure the organizer inside your bag.
Your custom bag organizer insert is now complete! The next time you reach into your bag, you'll know exactly where everything is. Happy organizing!
