Embarking on the journey to build a Magic: The Gathering Standard deck can be an exciting and rewarding experience. With a vast array of cards and strategies to choose from, the possibilities are almost endless. This guide will walk you through the process of creating a Standard deck, from understanding the format to selecting your cards and fine-tuning your strategy.

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let's ensure you're familiar with the Magic: The Gathering Standard format. Introduced in 2004, Standard is a rotating format that includes the most recent card sets. Currently, it consists of the latest three sets, providing a dynamic and ever-changing environment for deck building and play.

Choosing Your Strategy

Your first step in building a Standard deck is to decide on a strategy. This could be based on a specific archetype you enjoy, a deck that's currently performing well in the meta, or a unique idea you want to explore. Some popular Standard archetypes include Aggro, Midrange, Control, and Combo.

For this guide, let's assume you've decided to build an Aggro deck. Aggro decks aim to deal damage quickly and efficiently, often relying on low-cost creatures and burn spells to overwhelm opponents before they can establish their own game plan.

Selecting Your Colors

Once you've chosen your strategy, the next step is to decide on your colors. In Magic, colors represent different playstyles and card types. For an Aggro deck, red and white are typically the go-to colors due to their abundance of cheap creatures and direct damage spells. However, you might also consider including green for additional creatures or black for removal spells.

For our Aggro example, let's go with a Mono-Red strategy, focusing solely on red's powerful burn spells and aggressive creatures.

Determining Your Mana Curve

A mana curve is the distribution of the costs of spells in your deck. For an Aggro deck, you'll want a low mana curve to ensure you can play threats quickly and consistently. Aim for a curve that peaks around three or four mana, with a good number of one- and two-drop creatures.

Here's a simple mana curve for our Mono-Red Aggro deck: - One-drop creatures: 12-15 - Two-drop creatures: 8-10 - Three-drop creatures: 6-8 - Four-drop creatures or higher: 2-4

Building Your Deck

Now that you have a strategy, colors, and mana curve in mind, it's time to start building your deck. Begin by including all the cards that fit your mana curve and strategy. For our Mono-Red Aggro deck, this might include creatures like Fanatical Firebrand, Ghitu Lavarunner, and Viashino Pyromancer, as well as burn spells like Shock, Lightning Strike, and Lava Coil.

As you build your deck, keep an eye on your land count. In Standard, you'll typically want around 22-24 lands, depending on your mana curve and the number of expensive spells in your deck. For our Mono-Red Aggro deck, we'll aim for 22 lands to ensure we can consistently cast our spells while also having enough lands to play out our creatures.

Including Removal and Interaction

While Aggro decks focus on dealing damage quickly, it's essential to include some removal and interaction spells to deal with your opponent's threats. For our Mono-Red Aggro deck, this might include cards like Skewer the Critics, Chandra, Novice Pyromancer, and Lava Coil.

When selecting removal spells, consider their mana costs and the types of threats you expect to face. For example, Lava Coil can deal with a wide range of creatures, while Skewer the Critics can also take out planeswalkers and artifacts.

Adding Finishers and Synergy

Even the most aggressive decks need some way to close out games. For our Mono-Red Aggro deck, this might include finishers like Rekindling Phoenix, Chandra, Awakened Inferno, or even a planeswalker like Chandra, Torch of Defiance.

AD

Additionally, consider including cards that synergize with your strategy. For example, cards like Goblin Chainwhirler and Experimental Frenzy can provide additional value and help you push through your opponent's defenses.

Testing and Refining Your Deck

Once you have a playable version of your deck, it's time to test it out. Play against other decks, both in person and online, and take note of what works well and what doesn't. Don't be afraid to make changes based on your testing – Magic is a game of iteration and refinement.

When testing your deck, pay close attention to your matchups. Some decks will be easier to beat than others, and you may need to adjust your strategy or sideboard to account for these differences. For example, if you find that your deck struggles against Control decks, you might want to include more burn spells or creatures with haste in your sideboard.

Building a Magic: The Gathering Standard deck can be a rewarding and creative process. By understanding the format, choosing a strategy, and refining your deck through testing, you'll be well on your way to crafting a powerful and enjoyable deck. So grab your cards, and happy brewing!
