A backyard platform serves multiple purposes - it can be a perfect spot for outdoor dining, a stage for your kids' performances, or even a base for your garden projects. This guide will walk you through the process of building a backyard platform that's both sturdy and stylish.

Before you start, consider the size, shape, and height of your platform. It should complement your backyard's layout and accommodate your intended use. Also, ensure you check local building codes and obtain any necessary permits.

Choosing the Right Lumber

Pressure-treated lumber is the best choice for outdoor projects due to its resistance to rot, decay, and insect damage. It's also more affordable than composite materials. Ensure you select lumber that's straight and free of knots.

For a typical 10x10 foot platform, you'll need:

Selecting Support Blocks or Posts

Concrete pier blocks or pressure-treated 4x4 posts can be used to support your platform. Blocks are easier to install but can be more expensive. Posts require digging holes but are more affordable. Ensure your supports are level and stable.

Building the Platform Frame

Once your materials and tools are gathered, it's time to start building. Begin by laying out your supports in the desired location, ensuring they're level and square.

Next, attach the 4x4 posts to the supports using galvanized or stainless steel hardware. Ensure they're plumb (vertical) and secure.

Assembling the Frame

Using your 2x6 lumber, create the frame of your platform. Cut the lumber to size and attach them to the 4x4 posts using galvanized or stainless steel hardware. Ensure the frame is square and level.

For added strength, you can add 4x4 beams across the center of the platform, attaching them to the 4x4 posts.

Adding the Decking

Now it's time to add the decking. Using your 2x4 lumber, lay the boards perpendicular to the frame, leaving a small gap between each board for water drainage. Attach them to the frame using galvanized or stainless steel hardware.

Ensure the decking is level and the gaps between boards are consistent. You can use a scrap piece of lumber as a spacer to maintain even gaps.

Congratulations, you've just built a sturdy and stylish backyard platform! Remember to treat your platform with a water-repellent sealer to protect it from the elements. Enjoy your new outdoor space!
