Assembling the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit can be a rewarding task, transforming your space into an organized haven. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process, ensuring you attach each component correctly for a sturdy, long-lasting result.

Before you begin, gather all the parts from your KALLAX package, along with a Phillips head screwdriver, a rubber mallet, and an Allen key. Clear a spacious area to work in, and ensure you have a stable surface to build your unit on.

Understanding the KALLAX Components

The KALLAX comes with several parts: vertical and horizontal supports, shelves, back panels, and feet. Familiarizing yourself with these components will streamline the assembly process.

Each KALLAX unit is customizable, allowing you to choose the number of shelves and their height. The vertical supports are labeled 'A' and 'B', with 'A' being the shorter side. Horizontal supports connect these vertical pieces, while the back panels provide stability and can be attached with or without shelves for a seamless, built-in look.

Preparing the Vertical Supports

Begin by laying out the vertical supports, 'A' and 'B', side by side. These will form the structure's frame. Align them carefully, ensuring the notches on the inside faces match up. This will help you visualize where the horizontal supports and shelves will go.

I wanted that custom built-in look without the $3k price tag, so I used what I already had, added a pine countertop, pocket holed everything together, and used leftover plywood for the face frame + doors. Budget builds for the win. 🙌🏼 The best part? No one believes it’s IKEA until I tell them. If you’ve been scared to try an IKEA hack, this is your sign. | Built by Bec | Facebook

Using the Allen key, loosely attach the feet to the bottom of each vertical support. The feet should be facing downwards, with the adjustable part pointing outwards. This will allow you to level your KALLAX unit once it's assembled.

Attaching the Horizontal Supports

With the vertical supports in place, it's time to attach the horizontal supports. These come in pairs and are labeled '1', '2', and '3'. Start with the lowest pair ('1') and work your way up.

Slide the horizontal supports into the notches on the vertical pieces, ensuring they're level and flush with the outer edges. Use the Allen key to secure them tightly, but be careful not to overtighten and strip the screws.

Installing the Shelves

Now that the frame is secure, it's time to install the shelves. The KALLAX comes with three adjustable shelves, but you can add or remove them to suit your needs.

Start with the bottom shelf. Align it with the horizontal supports, ensuring it's level and centered. If you're using all three shelves, the middle one should sit on the middle horizontal supports, and the top one on the top supports.

Securing the Shelves in Place

Once the shelves are in position, use the Phillips head screwdriver to attach the shelf supports. These are small, L-shaped pieces that screw into the underside of the shelves and the horizontal supports.

Insert the shelf supports into the holes on the underside of the shelf and the horizontal supports. Secure them with the provided screws, but be careful not to overtighten. The shelves should be secure but still adjustable if needed.

Attaching the Back Panels

The back panels provide additional stability and a finished look. They can be attached with or without shelves, depending on your preference.

AD

If you're attaching the back panels with shelves, position them so the shelves are visible through the cutouts. If you're attaching them without shelves, align the panels with the outer edges of the vertical supports.

Use the rubber mallet to gently tap the back panels into place. This will help you get a snug fit without damaging the panels. Once the panels are in place, use the provided screws to secure them to the vertical supports.

Congratulations! You've successfully assembled your IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. Now, all that's left is to level it and fill it with your favorite books, decor, or organizational essentials. Enjoy your new, custom-built storage solution!
