Are you looking to add a touch of festivity to your workplace this holiday season? Consider creating a DIY advent calendar for work! This fun and engaging activity not only brings a sense of joy and anticipation to your colleagues but also fosters team spirit and camaraderie. Let's explore how you can create an office-friendly advent calendar that's sure to be a hit.

Before we dive into the details, let's clarify what an advent calendar is for those who might not be familiar. Originating from Germany in the 19th century, an advent calendar is a tradition where a small door or window is opened every day from December 1st to reveal a hidden surprise, typically leading up to Christmas. In recent years, this tradition has evolved to include non-religious themes and even adult-friendly versions, making it a perfect fit for the office.

Choosing Your Advent Calendar Format

One of the first decisions you'll need to make is choosing the format of your advent calendar. There are numerous creative options to suit different office environments and preferences.

**Wall-Mounted Calendar:** This classic format involves a large board or wall display with 24 doors or pockets, one for each day of December leading up to Christmas. You can find pre-made versions or create your own using cardstock, wrapping paper, or even recycled materials.

For a professional touch, consider using a whiteboard or chalkboard as the base, allowing you to write daily messages or draw festive designs. Alternatively, you could create a wall-mounted calendar using a series of small gift boxes or envelopes attached to a poster board or corkboard.

**Desk Calendar:** A desk calendar is an excellent option for smaller offices or those who prefer a more intimate advent experience. This format can be as simple as a stack of 24 envelopes or a small box with 24 compartments, placed on a shared desk or in a common area.

To make your desk calendar stand out, consider using decorative boxes or tins that can be reused year after year. You could also create a DIY advent calendar using a series of small mason jars or even empty toilet paper rolls decorated with festive wrapping paper.

**Interactive Calendar:** For a more engaging experience, consider creating an interactive advent calendar that encourages colleagues to work together to reveal the daily surprises. This could involve a series of puzzles, riddles, or even a scavenger hunt that leads to the day's treat.

Filling Your Advent Calendar

Once you've chosen your advent calendar format, it's time to fill it with festive surprises! The key to a successful office advent calendar is to include a mix of treats that cater to different tastes and preferences. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

**Sweet Treats:** Mini chocolates, candy canes, and gingerbread cookies are always a hit during the holiday season. Consider including a variety of sweets to ensure there's something for everyone.

**Fun and Games:** To add an element of fun and engagement to your advent calendar, consider including small games or activities. This could be anything from a pack of playing cards to a mini crossword puzzle book or even a small Rubik's cube.

Creating a Theme for Your Advent Calendar

To make your office advent calendar even more special, consider creating a unique theme that ties everything together. A theme can help guide your choices for the daily surprises and add an extra layer of fun and excitement to the experience.

**Holiday-Themed:** A classic holiday theme is always a popular choice for an office advent calendar. This could involve filling your calendar with traditional Christmas treats, like gingerbread men and candy canes, or incorporating festive colors and designs into your calendar's overall aesthetic.

Consider filling your advent calendar with winter-themed treats, like snowman-shaped chocolates or mini snow globes, and decorating your calendar with icy blues and sparkling whites.

**Around the World:** An around-the-world theme is an excellent way to celebrate the diverse cultural traditions of the holiday season. Each day, you could feature a treat or trinket inspired by a different country or culture, along with a fun fact or story about their holiday customs.
