Coleus: Where to Buy & Top Places to Purchase

When it comes to adding a vibrant touch to your indoor or outdoor spaces, few plants can rival the stunning beauty of coleus. With their striking foliage in a myriad of colors and patterns, coleus plants are a gardener's delight. But where can you purchase these captivating plants? Let's explore your options.

Coleus plants, scientifically known as Plectranthus scutellarioides, are native to Southeast Asia and Africa. They are annual plants that thrive in warm climates but can also be grown indoors as houseplants. With their easy-to-care nature and stunning visual appeal, it's no wonder coleus is a popular choice among plant enthusiasts.

Local Garden Centers and Nurseries

Your local garden centers and nurseries are often a great place to start your search for coleus plants. They typically stock a variety of coleus cultivars, ensuring you find the perfect fit for your garden or home. Plus, you can get expert advice from the staff on care and maintenance.

However, availability may vary depending on the season and the specific nursery's inventory. It's always a good idea to call ahead or check their website to ensure they have coleus plants in stock.

Big-Box Stores

Big-box stores like Home Depot, Lowe's, and Walmart often carry a selection of coleus plants, especially during the spring and summer months. They usually have a good variety of colors and patterns, making it convenient to find what you're looking for.

These stores also tend to have competitive pricing, and you can often find coleus plants in packs, which can be a cost-effective way to fill your garden or create a stunning indoor display.

Specialty Plant Stores

If you're looking for something unique or specific, consider visiting a specialty plant store. These stores often carry a wider variety of coleus cultivars, including rare and hard-to-find varieties.

Specialty plant stores may also have a deeper knowledge of coleus care, making them an excellent resource for new plant parents. However, they may come at a higher price point than big-box stores or garden centers.

Online Retailers

In today's digital age, purchasing coleus plants online has become increasingly popular and convenient. There are numerous online retailers that specialize in plants, offering a vast selection of coleus cultivars.

Some popular online plant retailers include The Sill, Bloomscape, and Costa Farms. They offer a wide range of coleus plants, from common varieties to rare finds. Plus, many online retailers offer helpful care guides and resources to ensure your coleus thrives.

Etsy and Other Marketplaces

Etsy is a unique online marketplace that connects you directly with independent sellers, including plant enthusiasts who propagate and sell coleus plants. This can be an excellent way to find rare or hard-to-find cultivars.

Other marketplaces like eBay and Facebook Marketplace may also have listings for coleus plants. However, it's essential to be cautious when purchasing plants online from unknown sellers. Always check reviews and ask questions before making a purchase.

Plant Swaps and Exchanges

If you're looking to expand your coleus collection without breaking the bank, consider attending local plant swaps or joining online plant exchange groups. These communities allow plant enthusiasts to trade plants, cuttings, and seeds, often at no cost.

Plant swaps and exchanges are an excellent way to meet other plant lovers, learn about new plants, and grow your collection. Plus, you can share your own plants and knowledge with the community.

In the world of plants, coleus stands out as a vibrant and captivating addition to any indoor or outdoor space. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a new plant parent, there's a coleus plant out there waiting for you. So start exploring your options, and before you know it, you'll be enjoying the stunning beauty of coleus in your own home or garden.
