Can Cabinet Pulls Be Different Sizes?

By Thomas Brown

When it comes to designing or renovating your kitchen, one of the most overlooked aspects is the consistency of cabinet pulls. Many homeowners wonder, "Can cabinet pulls be different sizes?" The short answer is yes, but there are several factors to consider to ensure a cohesive and visually appealing look.

Cabinet pulls, also known as knobs or handles, serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. They provide a grip for opening doors and drawers, and they also add a decorative touch to your cabinets. With the wide variety of styles, materials, and finishes available, it's no surprise that homeowners often consider using different sizes for different cabinets.

Understanding Cabinet Pull Sizes

Cabinet pulls come in various sizes, typically measured by their projection or reach. This is the distance from the center of the pull to the edge of the cabinet door. Standard sizes range from 3" to 12", with the most common being 5", 6", and 9".

Pulls are also available in different shapes, such as bar pulls, bin pulls, knob pulls, and more. Each style can come in various sizes, allowing for a mix-and-match approach if desired.

Matching Pull Sizes for a Uniform Look

Using the same size cabinet pulls throughout your kitchen creates a uniform, cohesive look. This approach works well for both traditional and modern styles. It's particularly effective in small kitchens, as it can make the space feel larger and more streamlined.

To achieve this look, measure your cabinet doors and drawers to determine the appropriate pull size. Consider the scale of your cabinets - larger cabinets can accommodate larger pulls, while smaller cabinets may look best with smaller pulls.

Mixing Pull Sizes for a Custom Look

If you're aiming for a more custom, eclectic look, mixing cabinet pull sizes can be an effective strategy. This approach works best in larger kitchens with varied cabinet sizes and styles.

For example, you might use larger pulls on base cabinets and smaller pulls on wall cabinets. Or, you could use larger pulls on deep drawers and smaller pulls on shallow drawers. When mixing sizes, it's essential to maintain consistency in the style and finish of the pulls to prevent the look from feeling disjointed.

Consider the Functionality of Your Cabinets

In addition to aesthetics, it's crucial to consider the functionality of your cabinets when choosing pull sizes. Larger pulls provide more leverage for opening heavy doors and drawers, making them ideal for base cabinets and pantry doors.

Smaller pulls, on the other hand, are often sufficient for wall cabinets and shallow drawers. They can also be a good choice for glass-front cabinets, as they allow the cabinet's contents to remain the focal point.

Pull Style and Size Compatibility

When selecting cabinet pulls, it's essential to consider the style and size of your cabinets. For example, large, modern cabinets often look best with long, linear pulls, while smaller, traditional cabinets may be better suited to smaller, round knobs.

Designed with Grace & Joy - Choosing your cabinet hardware sizes is NO JOKE, and this is probably one of the most panic-inducing tasks that we are asked to help out with from client. And I get it…it’s the final ✨“sparkle”✨ on your kitchen project, and nothing on which to throw in the towel! First off, 𝙢𝙮 𝙗𝙞𝙜𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙞𝙥: if you’ve worked with me before, you probably know that I recommend using painter’s tape to see how a pull will look like on your specific cabinet or drawer. This will help you really be able to envision the scale, and make sure the hardware is not too large or too small! But – it’s also important to understand a few other things: ① The same cabinet height can look VERY different with various pull sizes. In this image, the 5 1/16” pull looks a little small on these tall upper cabinets…and although the 12” one might be right for some, to others, it might be a little TOO oversized. A perfect middle ground is this 7 9/16” pull. ② Usually, upper cabinets are taller than lower cabinets, so you might want to size accordingly (ie: do a 7” pull on the uppers and a 5” pull on the lowers). ③ In general, you want to replicate the sizes used on the same cabinet height or drawer widths. For example, if you put a 5” pull on a lower cabinet and that same height cabinet is elsewhere in the kitchen, use a 5” on there as well. ④ Take a picture and draw the sizes you decide on, exactly where they will go. You may think you will remember, but take it from me…you may not. And once the holes are drilled, you’re stuck with that size. 🤯 It’s overwhelming, I know. But hopefully this guide, with a lot of trial and error from me, will help you out! ☺️💪🏼 . . . . . . . . . . . . . #designedwithgraceandjoy #temeculadesigner #murrietadesigner #temeculamoms #cabinets #cabinethardware #cabinetpulls #cabinethandles #cabinetdesign #kitchendesign #kitchencabinets #kitchenrenovation | Facebook

Additionally, the size of the pull should be proportional to the size of the cabinet. A small knob on a large cabinet can look lost, while a large pull on a small cabinet can overwhelm it.

Hardware Finish Consistency

Regardless of the size or style of your cabinet pulls, maintaining consistency in the finish is crucial. This applies whether you're using the same size pulls throughout your kitchen or mixing sizes.

AD

For a cohesive look, choose pulls with the same finish - whether it's oil-rubbed bronze, brushed nickel, polished chrome, or another finish. Mixing finishes can create a disjointed look, so it's best to stick with one finish for all your hardware.

In the end, the decision to use different sizes of cabinet pulls depends on your personal style and the specific needs of your kitchen. Whether you choose to match sizes for a uniform look or mix sizes for a custom feel, selecting the right pulls can significantly enhance the functionality and aesthetics of your cabinets. So, go ahead and explore the possibilities - your dream kitchen awaits!
