The Augustine Rosary, also known as the Rosary of the Dawn, is a beautiful and contemplative prayer tool inspired by the teachings of St. Augustine. It's a unique variation of the traditional Rosary, offering a deeper insight into the mysteries of the faith. This article explores the Augustine Rosary, its history, how to pray it, and its significance in Christian spirituality.

St. Augustine, the great theologian and Doctor of the Church, is renowned for his profound understanding of the Trinity and the nature of God. The Augustine Rosary, reflecting his theological insights, is a powerful tool for meditative prayer and a deeper connection with God.

The History and Origin of the Augustine Rosary

The Augustine Rosary is believed to have originated in the 17th century, with its roots tracing back to the teachings of St. Augustine. It was popularized by Fr. Paul of Moll, a Belgian priest who promoted its use in the late 19th century. The rosary gained further recognition when Pope Leo XIII endorsed it in 1886.

The Augustine Rosary is distinct from the traditional Dominican Rosary, which focuses on the mysteries of Christ's life. Instead, it delves into the mysteries of the Blessed Trinity, offering a unique perspective on the faith.

The Structure of the Augustine Rosary

The Augustine Rosary consists of 53 beads, divided into four sets of 13 beads each, representing the four aspects of the Blessed Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, and the Unity of the Trinity. Each set is further divided into three groups of four beads, symbolizing the four virtues of faith, hope, charity, and prudence.

Saint Augustine’s Prayer to the Holy Spirit Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.
